It’s not difficult to ensure your website will be indexed by a search engine, but it can be very challenging to ensure it’s listed in association with specific keywords. Generally speaking, search engines look at four things: rank, authority, relevance and the technical elements of your website.
Rank is the position your website is placed on the search engine results pages for particular keyword searches. Your rank indicates how relevant your website is for a search term, and what authority it has from the search engine’s perspective. Your ranking is based on a number of factors — website speed, page errors, and inbound links are just a few examples that impact your online visibility (or lack thereof). Optimizing your website in these areas can not only improve its rank, it also creates a better user experience.
Search engines determine the authority and credibility of a website’s content, using factors such as the type and quality of inbound links from other websites. However, a large number of inbound links doesn’t necessarily result in a high ranking. Search engines also check the authority of sites linked to you, the context of the link, and the anchor text being used. Another key factor in defining authority is the age of your domain. Older sites typically have a higher trust factor.
Relevance is one of the most important ranking factors. Search engines not only detect that you are using certain keywords, they also look for clues as to how relevant your content is to a particular search query. In addition to the actual text on your web pages, search engines also examine their structure, the use of keywords in your URLs, the formatting of the page (such as the use of bold font), and which keywords appear in the title and in the body of the text, etc.
Search engines also analyze (in great detail) the technical aspects of your website. For example, how quickly your site loads plays a major role in your website ranking. That means good coding on your website is very important. Additional technical factors that can impact your website’s findability include; header tags, meta description, keywords in image alt tags, schema markup and mobile responsiveness.
